הַנִּכְנָס לִכְרַךְ מִתְפַּלֵּל שְׁתַּיִם, אַחַת בִּכְנִיסָתוֹ וְאַחַת בִּיצִיאָתוֹ. בֶּן עַזַּאי אוֹמֵר, אַרְבַּע, שְׁתַּיִם בִּכְנִיסָתוֹ וּשְׁתַּיִם בִּיצִיאָתוֹ, וְנוֹתֵן הוֹדָאָה לְשֶׁעָבַר, וְצוֹעֵק לֶעָתִיד לָבֹא:

Einer, der eine Stadt betritt, spricht zwei Gebete, eines beim Betreten und eines beim Verlassen. Ben Azzai sagt: Vier, zwei beim Betreten und zwei beim Verlassen. [Als er eintreten will, sagt er: "... dass du mich in Frieden in diese Stadt führst." Sobald er eingetreten ist, sagt er: "Ich danke Ihnen, dass Sie mich in Frieden in diese Stadt geführt haben."—zwei beim Betreten. Als er gehen will, sagt er: "... dass du mich in Frieden aus dieser Stadt führst." Sobald er gegangen ist, sagt er: "Ich danke dir, dass du mich in Frieden aus dieser Stadt geführt hast."] Und er dankt für die Vergangenheit und schreit nach der Zukunft. [Warum das alles? Denn man muss seinem Schöpfer für das Gute danken, das er erfahren hat, und er muss in Zukunft für das Gute beten.]

Tosefta Berakhot

The Beracha (blessing) of Zimun is from the Torah (i.e. a Torah obligation) as it is said, “And you should eat, and be satisfied, and bless…” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the Beracha of Zimun. “… Hashem, your God …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the first Beracha [of Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals)]. “… for the land …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the Beracha about the land (i.e. the second Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon]. “… the good …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to the Beracha about] Jerusalem (i.e. the third Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon] as it is said “… this good mountain and Levanon.” (Deuteronomy 3:25). “… which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to the Beracha of] Hatov Vehameitiv (The Good and Who does good) (i.e. the fourth Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon].
