הַמּוֹצִיא פּוֹעֲלָיו לַשָּׂדֶה, בִּזְמַן שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם עָלָיו מְזוֹנוֹת, אוֹכְלִין וּפְטוּרִין. וְאִם יֶשׁ לָהֶם עָלָיו מְזוֹנוֹת, אוֹכְלִין אַחַת אַחַת מִן הַתְּאֵנָה, אֲבָל לֹא מִן הַסַּל וְלֹא מִן הַקֻּפָּה וְלֹא מִן הַמֻּקְצֶה:
Einer, der seine Arbeiter auf das Feld gebracht hat, kann essen und ist befreit, wenn ihnen von ihm kein Essen geschuldet wird. Aber wenn ihnen von ihm etwas zu essen geschuldet wird, dürfen sie nacheinander von den Feigen essen, aber nicht aus dem Korb, aus dem großen Korb oder von dem Ort, an dem sie trocknen.
Tosefta Maasrot
One who brought his workers out to the field -- he does not have the right to feed them unless he has [already] tithed, and they do not have the right to eat unless they have tithed (cf. Maasr. 3:2 "they may eat and be exempt"). But if the homeowner brought them out [to the field] and placed a generous amount [of food] in front of them, they do not need to tithe.
