MISHNAH: The overseer said to them1Every day of the year, when the daily morning sacrifice was brought at dawn., “go and see whether the time of slaughter has arrived.” When it arrived, the lookout says “it is radiant.” Mathatias ben Samuel2He is mentioned in Mishnah Šeqalim5:1 as overseer of the lotteries. The sources are not unanimous about the meaning of these names, whether they came with the job or are a remembrance of outstanding personalities who once filled these positions. on the occasion. Rebbi said, could not the Cohen who was removing the ashes from the interior altar himself clean the candelabra? But to make a procession on the occasion. There, we have stated: “He deposits the flask on the second step and leaves;86Mishnah Tamid 3:9, speaking of the Cohen who cleans 5 lights of the candelabrum and refills them with oil.” “he takes the flask from the second step and leaves.87Mishnah Tamid 6:1; the same Cohen returns, cleans the remaining two lights on the candelabrum, refills, and lights them, when he enters the Sanctuary a second time.” Rebbi Joḥanan said, why does he enter twice for incense? Only to make a procession on the occasion. Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish said, it is a biblical command: in the morning, in the morning, when he cleans the lights he shall burn the incense88Ex. 30:7.. What does Rebbi Joḥanan do with this? He could enter to clean and to burn incense89The verse does not require different persons for the different jobs (also we already had interpreted in the morning, in the morning as meaning “early in the morning, cf. Note 49.).

It was stated: “No courtyard was in Jerusalem which was not illuminated by the light of the water-drawing festivity.” It was stated: A woman could check her wheat by the light of the fire on the altar. Would they not commit larceny64Since using Temple property for private affairs is the crime of me`ilah which requires restitution, payment of a fine, and a reparation offering. Babli 52b/53a.? No, as Rebbi Joshua ben Levi said, taste, looks, and sound are not subject to larceny65Since they are not money’s worth.. Six sounds were heard in Jericho. 66Mishnah Tamid3:8.“In Jericho one heard the sound of the opening of the main gate67Of the Temple courtyards.. In Jericho one heard the sound of the organ68Described in Halakhah 6.. In Jericho one heard the sound of the wooden mechanical device for the basin which Ben Qaṭin made69When at dawn the basin was lifted from the cistern; Yoma3:10, Note 192.. In Jericho one heard the voice of Gabinius the herald. In Jericho one heard the sound of the fife70Not the ones of the water-drawing festivities but the ones played before the altar, Note 3.. In Jericho one heard the sound of the cymbal71Which signals the start of the Levites’ song for the daily morning sacrifice., and some are saying, also the voice of the High Priest when he mentioned the Name on the day of Atonement. In Jericho one smelled the compounding of the incense. Rebbi Eliezer ben Dalgai said, my family had goats in the Akhwar Mountains72An unidentified locality; in Babli sources מכוור. which were sneezing from the smell of compounding the incense.”

251For the following, cf. Bava mesiaˋ 3:13, Notes 136–145; Moˋed qatan 3:7. Who is the teacher who taught him wisdom? The one who taught him first, the words of Rebbi Meïr. Rebbi Jehudah said, the one from whom he received most of his instruction. Rebbi Yose said, anyone who explained a Mishnah to him.252Tosephta 2:5, Bava mesiaˋ 2:30.” Rebbi Abbahu came in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: Practice follows him who said, the one from whom he received most of his instruction. Why did he not explain that this follows Rebbi Jehudah? There are Tannaïm who state it switched253The name tradition in the Tosephta is not certain.. Rebbi Eleazar tore his garment for his first teacher. Samuel took off [his phylacteries] for one who had explained a Mishnah to him254As a sign of mourning. The phylacteries are identified as the “splendor” which Ezechiel had to remove in mourning, Ez. 24:17. The text in Bava mesiaˋ parallels the Babli (Bava mesiaˋ 33a) in reporting that he tore his garment.. What Mishnah did he explain to him? Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, “for one key he has to go down to his arm-pit and one opens straight.255Mishnah Tamid 3:6.” What means “for one he has to gown to his arm-pit,” he had to lower his hand under his arm-pit until it could be opened256The doors of the Temple Hall could be opened only from the inside. When the door was locked, a Cohen entered from a small side door which led to a guard room. The lock of this side door was hidden; the Cohen had to take the key, lower his entire arm to the arm-pit behind the partition wall and only then could insert the key. Tamid 30b.. Rebbi Ḥanania257With G read “Hanina”. was leaning on Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Abba in Sepphoris, when he saw everybody running. He asked him, why is everybody running? He answered, Rebbi Joḥanan is sitting preaching in Rebbi Banaia’s house of study and everybody is running to hear him. He said, praised be the Merciful Who showed me fruits while I am alive. In Agadah I explained him everything except Proverbs and Ecclesiastes258This proves that even a teacher of homiletics has the rank of teacher..

Jerusalem Talmud Chagigah

There we have stated210Mishnah Tamid 3:4.: “They entered the storage room of the vessels and brought out 93 silver and gold vessels.” Rebbi Samuel bar Naḥman in the name of Rebbi Jonathan: Corresponding to the 93 Names written in the Chapters of Haggai, Zacharia, and Malachi211“Name” usually is reserved for the Tetragrammaton. Here certainly “Zacharia” should be deleted since his text contains 132 times the Tetragrammaton. The count is correct if one considers only Haggai and Malachi and also allows Elohim as a Name.. Rebbi Ḥuna said, I computed them and they are only 83, corresponding to the 83 signatures written in Ezra212Those mentioned in Nehemiah 10. where each of them declared the Unity of the Name of the Holy One, praise to Him, and signed. Some want to say, corresponding to the day when the daily sacrifices were the most, corresponding to thirteen bulls, fourteen sheep, two rams, and one goat213All 93 vessels are only needed on the first day of Tabernacles..

Samuel followed Rebbi Yose. A person explained to Samuel: “Two keys, for one he has to go down to his arm-pit and one opens straight;144Mishnah Tamid 3:6. The second door, from the guard room into the Temple hall, could then be opened by a regular key inserted straight into the keyhole.” that he lowered his hand under his arm-pit until he could insert the key straight.
