עֲקַבְיָא בֶן מַהֲלַלְאֵל אוֹמֵר, הִסְתַּכֵּל בִּשְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים וְאִי אַתָּה בָא לִידֵי עֲבֵרָה. דַּע מֵאַיִן בָּאתָ, וּלְאָן אַתָּה הוֹלֵךְ, וְלִפְנֵי מִי אַתָּה עָתִיד לִתֵּן דִּין וְחֶשְׁבּוֹן. מֵאַיִן בָּאתָ, מִטִּפָּה סְרוּחָה, וּלְאָן אַתָּה הוֹלֵךְ, לִמְקוֹם עָפָר רִמָּה וְתוֹלֵעָה. וְלִפְנֵי מִי אַתָּה עָתִיד לִתֵּן דִּין וְחֶשְׁבּוֹן, לִפְנֵי מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא:

Akavya ben Mahalalel dit: Prenez à cœur trois choses et vous ne serez pas amené à la transgression: sachez d'où vous êtes venu et où vous allez et devant qui vous êtes destiné à rendre le jugement et la comptabilité. D'où venez-vous? D'une goutte en putréfaction. [la goutte de sperme. Et même si au moment de la conception il ne se putréfie pas (ne putréfier dans l'utérus qu'après trois jours, et quand il putréfie, il n'est pas apte à la fécondation), on l'appelle encore "putréfier" car c'est sur le point de le faire si immédiatement après avoir été hors de l'utérus. Et celui qui prend à cœur qu'il vient d'une goutte en putréfaction est sauvé de l'orgueil.] Et où vas-tu? Dans un lieu de poussière, de vers et d'asticots. [Celui qui prend cela à cœur est sauvé de la convoitise et du désir de richesse.] Et devant qui êtes-vous destiné à rendre un jugement et à rendre des comptes? Devant le roi des rois des rois—le Saint béni soit-Il. [Celui qui prend cela à cœur se sépare du péché et ne tombe pas dans la transgression.]

Moreover, our rabbis, of blessed memory, said³⁷Talmud Baba Kama 30, “Whosoever desires to become a Chassid should fulfill the words of Pirkei Avot – which speak regarding the acquisition of good character traits. For example, our sages, of blessed memory, said³⁸Avot 2:1, “Rabbi [Yehudah the Prince] said, “What is the straight path that a person should follow? Everything that is both beautiful to the doer and beautiful to him from others etc.” Akaviah ben Mehalalel said³⁹Avot 3:1, “Contemplate three matters and you will never come to the possibility of transgressing. Know from whence you came and where you are going and before whom you are destined to give an accounting. From whence did you come? - From a putrid drop. Where are you going? – To a place of dust, maggots and worms. Before whom are you destined to give an accounting? – Before the King, King of kings, The Holy One, Blessed is He. Likewise, Rabbi Levitas of Yavneh said⁴⁰Avot 4:4, “Be very, very humble, for the hope of man is maggots.” What Akaviah meant when he said, “and you will never come to the possibility of transgressing” is that you will never be subject to the Yetzer HaRa which causes a person to transgress, because your Yetzer HaRa will cease to be. However, if the Yetzer HaRa still exists and one merely restrains himself by force of willpower, he should have stated, “you will not transgress”.
